ALESSANDRO SICORA

I was born in Trieste, Italy, in 1966. I am social worker and associate professor at the University of Trento, Italy since 2018, I had been lecturer/assistant professor at the University of Calabria, Italy from 2008 to 2018. I had taught at the Università Ca'Foscari in Venice, Italy from 2014 to 2017. I have a BA in Social Work, a MA in Political Sciences and a PhD in Sociology, Social Work and Sciences of Educations.

My main research interests include: methods of social work, reflexive practice, social policy, shame and emotions in social work. I published books and articles on the same topics. My latest book is "Learning from mistakes in social work" (Policy Press).

In the period 1990 - 2007 I have been director of some small charities in Italy.

I am Marie Curie Fellow and from 2012 to 2016 had coordinated the Italian research groups of the two EU funded research “Civil Engagement in Social Work: Developing Global Models” and “The public health implications of neoliberal policy and management on professions and vulnerable populations” involving universities in Europe (Italy, UK, Finland, Spain, Portugal), Turkey and all the BRICS. In the frame of these researches I did several secondments in Saint Petersburg (Russia) Chennai (India), Stellenbosh (Cape Town) and Guangzhou (China). Currently I am involved in the reserach “For a Better Tomorrow: Social Enterprises on the Move” (FAB-MOVE). This project brings together researchers and practitioners from 17 countries worldwide in order to explore the question of how social enterprises can grow and flourish.

I am a research fellow at the Department of Social Work, Stellenbosch University, South Africa. 

From 2011 to 2015 I have been a member of the Executive Committee of EASSW (European Association of Schools of Social Work). Currently I am President of the Italian Society of Social Work (former Italian Association of Social Work Educators - AIDOSS) and Secretary of ESWRA (European Social Work Research Association).
